NORMOTERM
Spirea ulmaria
Main constituents: flavonoid glycosides, phenolic glycosides, salicylaldehyde, polyphenols.
Main indications: inflammatory states, water retention, edema formation. The plant is traditionally used in the symptomatic treatment of joint pain, febrile and flu-like states. In addition to salicylates, spirea contains flavonoids (0.5%), vitamin C, and tannins.
Salix alba
Main constituents: phenolic glycosides, salicylic acid, flavonoids, tannins.
Main indications: febrile and inflammatory states, rheumatic and arthritic pains. Salicylic acid was first extracted from the bark of the weeping willow. This substance is produced by plants to protect themselves from chemical, physical, and biological attacks and is an anti-inflammatory useful in various febrile situations as an antipyretic or as a mild analgesic.

Concentrated Phenols and Polyphenols Obtained from Hydrolyzed Lignocellulose
LIGNIN is a heavy polymeric complex made up of phenylpropane units. There are three monomers present in varying ratios in all lignins: coniferyl alcohol, coumaryl alcohol, and sinapyl alcohol. The union of these monomers creates a class of phenols commonly known as lignans, which in the plant serve a defense function against pathogens (fungi, bacteria, and viruses) and provide antioxidant protection to sensitive parts of the plant (young branches, leaves, buds, fruits) from solar radiation. Lignans, when introduced into mammals through diet, are modified by intestinal bacteria and then absorbed.
