Mixtures of grasses or pure ryegrass?

The Advantage of Using Grass Mixtures Compared to Pure Seeds

The choice of using pure ryegrass forage must follow strict criteria, as its tendency to absorb large quantities of potassium and nitrates makes it highly susceptible to lodging. Additionally, it results in a product that is not qualitatively suitable for feeding our cows.

The issue is particularly pronounced in areas where the disposal of livestock manure is very abundant relative to the available land area. The situation has been further exacerbated in recent decades by climate change, which has led to very dry winters and springs, preventing the leaching of these two components from the soil.

Tecnozoo technicians recommend focusing on the use of grass mixtures or pure cereals (even in combination with clover).

Indeed, the greater use of cereals is preferable as these cultivars have a lower capacity than clovers to absorb nitrates and potassium from the soil.

Moreover,

we have found that in recent years, late or mid-late varieties present in various grass mixtures have become essential due to ongoing climate changes; indeed, they ensure:

  • An extensive harvesting window (8-10 days).
  • In stable climatic conditions, a postponement of harvesting compared to early varieties by approximately 10 days.
  • Less stress on the crop during very dry springs (late varieties tend to recover better after a very dry spring, showing significantly better results compared to early varieties that would begin heading earlier, completing their cycle sooner).
  • Late varieties produce more in terms of quantity and therefore dry matter per hectare compared to early varieties.
  • Greater resistance to fungal diseases.

Annual Mixtures EUROPA PR

HAY / BUNDLED

Agronomic Characteristics

  • Sowing Time: Autumn (September – November)
  • Sowing Rate: 70-90 Kg per hectare (depending on soil type, seedbed preparation, and planting time)
  • Overall Fertilization: 100-150 units of N/ha; 50-70 units of P-K/ha (depending on soil availability)
  • Harvest Time: For hay or pre-wilting from the boot stage to the beginning of grain ripening

The annual mixture EUROPA PR guarantees high-quality forage production, very palatable to livestock with a high protein content and low levels of calcium, potassium, and nitrates.

It offers high digestibility due to its plant composition. This mixture provides a high yield of green matter (much more than a pure crop), and due to its wide harvest window (from May 10 to 25), a second harvest is possible.

EUROPA PR is composed of two diploid ryegrasses and a fine-stemmed, leafy oat to ensure complete drying of the product. Particularly suitable for areas where a dry ration is used.

Annual Mixtures TECNOEFA

SILAGE

HAY / BUNDLED

Agronomic Characteristics

  • Sowing Time: Autumn (September – November)
  • Sowing Rate: 70-90 Kg per hectare (depending on soil type, seedbed preparation, and planting time)
  • Overall Fertilization: To be assessed in the field with the technical service
  • Harvest Time: For hay or pre-wilting from the boot stage to the beginning of grain ripening

The TECNOEFA mixture is designed to meet the requirements of the new CAP regulations. This mixture is formulated to contain 53% by weight of legumes. It guarantees an excellent product both quantitatively and qualitatively, making it suitable for livestock feeding; additionally, due to its wide harvest window (May 5 to 25), it allows for the planting of a second crop. The same mixture can also be used as a second cutting: in this case, the harvest will include Alexandrian clover and ryegrass. The resulting forage is well-structured due to the presence of grasses and has a high protein content from the association with legumes.
